The 2013 Spring Championship of Online Poker was in full swing on Monday at
PokerStars. Barely has the Series kicked off, it already produced at least one memorable moment. Freddy Deeb, who has turned into quite the SCOOP specialist since last year’s edition when he managed to win no fewer than 4 SCOOP high events, was looking to add his 6th SCOOP title to the tally in event #4, the $2.1k Badugi one. He made the heads-up stage of the
poker tournament, but that was where he ran into Paul Volpe, who had different ideas about who should walk away with the top prize. Freddy Deeb denied, the $34.7k top prize ended up in Volpe’s possession. Another interesting thing about the event was that both Volpe and Deeb had made the final table of the same event last year. Deeb busted out in 7th place then, and Volpe made it all the way to 5th, picking up $8.8k.
A total of 47 players coughed up the buy-in this year, generating a prize-pool of $94k, leaving the initial guarantee of $50k in the dust. It took the starting field about 2 hours to play down to the final table. Deeb had the lead at that point, but Volpe had a decent-sized stack at his disposal too.
Phil Shaw was eliminated in 6th place, followed to the rail by Chris McClung. Two unknown players finished in 4th and 3rd, setting up the heads-up stage of the event. Volpe had a pretty massive lead when the heads-up bout commenced, and he took full advantage of it. Still, it took him about 45 minutes to send Deeb packing for good, picking up the title and the prize. Deeb earned a $23.5k reward for his efforts.
