2013 WSOP – Anthony Gregg Wins Event #47

Four players returned on the final day of the $111,111 NL Holdem One Drop High Roller (#47 of the 2013 WSOP), looking to play down to a winner. They were the survivors of an initial starting field of 166 players, and there were indeed a few interesting names among them. Antonio Esfandiari, the winner of the biggest ever live poker tournament, the Big One for One Drop, which featured a $1 million buy-in last year, and which awarded the biggest ever single prize taken down in a poker tournament, was there. Esfandiari looked like he was going to be able to mount a successful title defense, but in the end he fell short. Chris Klodnicki was there as well, together with Bill Perkins and Anthony Gregg. Perkins had the chip lead at the beginning of the day, but in the end, the player who took down the bracelet and the $4.83 million top prize was Gregg.

Esfandiari’s Day 4 run was the shortest: he was the first one to bite the dust, after he pushed all-in on a coin-flip and was outdrawn by Klodnicki. He picked up $1.43 million for his 4th place, so he didn’t leave empty-handed by any means.
Perkins fell next. He shoved all-in with an A,5 against Gregg’s A,Q and - while he did take the lead on the flop – he eventually lost out, hitting the rail in 3rd place. He was rewarded with $1.96 million.

Thanks to his elimination, Gregg got to the heads-up stage of the event with a 2-1 chip lead, and he capitalized on that advantage. He began extending his lead straight away, and soon, the tournament was over. The last hand of the event saw Gregg’s top pair triumph over Klodnicki’s gutshot straight draw which failed to fill up.
