2013 WSOP - Athanasios Polychronopoulos Wins Event #17

Event #17 of the 2013 WSOP has gone into the books a couple of hours ago and the winner is Athanasios Polychronopoulos, who took home the gold and the $518.7k that went with it. Although he may not be a particularly well-known player, Polychronopoulos is no stranger to the live tournament scene and to the
WSOP. In fact, this bracelet was his second: his first one came in 2011, in a similarly popular event.
Event #17 saw a total of 2,105 players belly up to its tables at kick-off. It took 2 days for the field to play down to the final 15. Two tablefuls of players returned on the last day of the event, looking to first make the final table and then to play down all the way to a winner. David Baker started the day with the largest stack. Joe Cada was also present, together with Barry Greenstein and of course the eventual winner.
Polychronopoulos was third in chips when the action kicked off, and he started the day on the right foot, when he scored the first elimination. Joe Cada had a good start to his day as well, and he locked horns with Polychronopoulos several times, before succumbing in 4th place and missing the bracelet-bus.
Polychronopoulos’ final table performance was nothing short of impressive: he kept up the pressure pouring on the aggression at all times. Everett Carlton’s elimination in 3rd place set up the heads-up stage of the
poker tournament. Given how Polychronopoulos had dominated the action up to that point, it didn’t come as a surprise that the heads-up bout only lasted 3 hands. The last hand of the event saw Manuel Mutke’s Qd, Jh succumb to Polychronopoulos’ Ad, Jd.
