2013 WSOP – Day 1 of Event #51 Complete

Event #51 of the 2013 WSOP is a truly significant one: it is the $10k Ladies
NL Holdem Championship event, which stirred up quite a bit of controversy in years past. Male players were attracted to the tables of the Ladies event like moths to a flame, on account of the easy pickings they were hoping for. Some of them dressed up as women while others didn’t bother, and the true ladies didn’t care much for having these players in what was supposed to be their event. Due to all the past controversy, this year, organizers have decided to try to limit the access to male players in a different way. The event remained an open one, featuring a full buy-in of $10k. All female players received a 90% discount however, which meant that they were able to buy in for $1k. The scheme worked wonderfully as at the conclusion of Day 1 it was announced that not a single $10k buy-in had been registered.
A total of 954 women bought into the event. After the customary 10 levels which went into Day 1, 122 of them were left standing. The player to have the largest stack bagged was Chris Priday, who finished with 96.2k chips. Scores of “name” players bellied up to the tables at the beginning of the day and some of them failed to make it to the end: Victoria Coren and Vanessa Selbst both busted out, together with Jennifer Tilly, Vanessa Rousso and Kara Scott. Other high-profile ladies managed to navigate the treacherous waters of Day 1 with more success: Liv Boeree and Jackie Glazier will return in Day 2, together with Danielle Andersen. Glazier finished 11th, followed by
PokerStars’ Boeree in 12th.
Sari F Utchen had a great Day 1: she finished second in chips, having 80.5k bagged.
