2013 WSOP – Day 1 Report

The first day of the 2013 WSOP saw two events kick off and run simultaneously: the $500k Casino Employees event, which is the traditional opener of the WSOP, was the first one to get going. 896 players bellied up to the tables of this poker tournament, looking to grab the first WSOP 2013 title. The turn-out was bigger than last year’s, by a total of 162 players. 11 levels of action went into the day. The money-bubble burst late on Monday and the 90 survivors all landed a paying position. The end of the day saw only 55 players remaining. The eventual winner of the event will take home an $85k top prize and the first gold bracelet of this year’s WSOP.

Event #2 was the first open event of the series. The $5k NL Holdem affair saw 481 players register, creating a prize-pool of $2 million+. Unlike in years past, the opening day of the Series wasn’t solely reserved for the casino employees. 8 levels of action went into the first day of the event, at the end of which poker pro Tom Marchese emerged with the largest stack. Numerous “name” players like PokerStars pro Daniel Negreanu, Phil Hellmuth and Phil Ivey played in the event too.
Marchese finished with 153.9k chips to his name. He was followed by Scott Baumstein with 111.1k and David Sands with 110.8k. Darryll Fish and Fabrice Touil finished in the top 10 as well. Famous Olympian Michael Phelps was among the starters on Monday too. He managed to survive to day 2, unlike Daniel Negreanu, Jason Mercier and Phil Ivey who all bit the dust.

The next WSOP 2013 event to get going is the $1k NL Holdem one, slated to kick off on Thursday.
