2013 WSOP – Event #16 – Day 1 Report

The first day of event #16 of the
2013 WSOP, the $10k Heads-Up NL Holdem event, is in the books and the field has played down to the final 32. A total of 162 players bellied up to the tables at the beginning of the day, looking to make it as deep in the event as possible. Three rounds of action went into the day and although quite a bit of progress has indeed been made eliminations-wise, the money has still not been reached: only the top 16 finishers will get to take something home for their efforts. Needless to say, the high buy-in guaranteed a solid pro-presence in this poker tournament. Phil Hellmuth, the Poker Brat,
PokerStars pro Jason Mercier, Michael Mizrachi,
online poker wiz Ben Sulsky, Randy Lew and Melanie Eisner were all among those who made the final 32. Because of the uneven nature of the starting field a little bit of a compromise needed to be made at the beginning of the day. Thus, 34 players got down to playing the first round of the event, while 128 of their peers were automatically advanced to the second round. To make it fair towards those who were eliminated during the first round, the organizers decided to give half of their buy-in back, in case they were indeed dropped.
Phil Ivey, Jonathan Duhamel and Vanessa Selbst were eliminated during this opening round, together with Ben Lamb, Dario Minieri and Tom Marchese.
After a bit of a break and some controversy surrounding the re-draws, the action got underway again. Daniel Negreanu, Antonio Esfandiari, Faraz Jaka and Scott Seiver fell during the first complete round. The second complete round saw the field go from 64 to 32. Ludovic Lacay, Paul Volpe and Chino Rheem were eliminated during this round among others of course.
Playing at PokerStars and hunting for WSOP 2013 Main Event packages for small change still makes plenty of sense.
