2013 WSOP – Event #27 Plays Down to Heads-up Stage

Event #27 of the 2013 WSOP, the $3k
NL Holdem Mixed Max event, was probably supposed to play down to a winner on its 3rd day the same way the majority of the
WSOP 2013 events have thus far, but in the end it failed to achieve that objective. Two players remained standing when the action was called: Max Steinberg and Isaac Hagerling. The event will return with a 4th day when the heads-up bout will decide the winner.
32 players returned to the tables at the beginning of the day to play down to the bracelet. The round of 32 was pretty much without any surprises: only 4 of the lower-seeded players managed to advance, a number well within the acceptable variance. The biggest upset was Ognjen Secularac’s victory over the higher-seeded Oleksandr Gnatenko.
The round of 16 was even less eventful as far as upsets were concerned: all the favorites won. Mike Watson was the only one who let a lower-seeded player advance: Jason Koon bested him after a true perfect hand of a boat over boat win.
The highest-seeded player, Brandon Cantu, had a bit of a hard time during this round as well, but he eventually managed to solve the defenses of his opponent, Daniel Buzgon.
He failed to advance from the round of 8 though, losing out to Max Steinberg. Cantu built up a massive lead in the beginning of their match, but Steinberg came storming back and he was the one to advance into the round of 4. Jeremy Ausmus advanced into the round of 4 too.
Steinberg then defeated Jason Koon and Isaac Hagerling disposed of Yevgeniy Timoshenko. Hagerling then took on Ausmus and he advanced, guaranteeing himself a minimum payday of $231.5k. The winner will take home $372.3k.
