The second day of event #42, another $1k NL Holdem event of the
2013 WSOP has attained its objective: it managed to whittle the field down to the final 11, having started of 2,100 players. The second day of action featured 10 full levels, and it kicked off with 168 players returning to the tables.
Rory Mathews finished the second day with the largest stack: he had 898k chips bagged. Other players who had good days and finished with massive stacks were Denis Gnidash (who finished second with 816k chips) and Norbert Szecsi, who finished 3rd with a stack of 738k.
Mathews had a good day through and through: he held a healthy stack all through the day and towards the end of it, he added a massive pot to it to lock up the lead for good. In the said hand, he went up against Sergei Tikhonov, holding pocket Js against the latter’s pocket 10s. The chips went into the middle preflop and it became obvious that Tichonov was in a bad shape. Indeed, the flop gave Mathews another J for the set and Tichonov was bounced in 16th place, picking up $12.5k for his efforts. That pot gave Mathews’ stack a major thrust and he picked up several smaller pots during the remainder of the day.
Interestingly enough, the action on Day 2 was so fast that around half the Day 2 starting field was sent to the rail by the time the first break came along.
Tony Dunst was one of the early victims, together with Isaac Baron. The start of the day chip leader was Matt Matros. He bit the dust in 51st place, failing to cash in on his large stack status.
David Chiu was the last “name” player to bust out: he finished 30th.
