2013 WSOP – Event #53 Plays Down to its Final 3

Day 3 of event #53, another $1.5k NL Holdem event of the
2013 WSOP, was supposed to see the field play down to a winner, but the objective proved unattainable for the participants. Even though the final table got off to a quick start and managed to whittle the field down to 3 relatively quickly, once 3-handed stage had been reached, everything came to a standstill. Players were swapping chips back and forth but no actual progress was made towards determining a winner. Eventually, the organizers were forced to call it the day, adding an unscheduled day 4 to allow David Vamplew, Arttu Raekorpi and Brett Shaffer to decide the fate of the 53rd bracelet.
The player who finished the day with the largest stack was well-known pro David Vamplew, who finished with 5.34 million chips to his name. Shaffer has a decent stack too: he had 5.28 million chips bagged at the end of the day. The short-stack is Raekorpi, who had only around 2 million chips bagged.
Vamplew played well through the day and he would probably have clinched the win as well had it not been for a bad beat he suffered at the hands of Brett Shaffer about 15 hands before the day was called. He had pocket rockets and his chips in the middle, but Shaffer cracked the rockets to take a bunch of his chips and to secure his spot at the Day 4 table with a stack almost as big as that of the unlucky Scotsman.
Arttu Raekorpi of Finland had the opportunity to bounce one player during three-handed play too: he went up against David Vamplew who hit a three-outer to stave off elimination and to bounce back.
The eventual winner of the event will take home a $665.3k prize.
