2013 WSOP Main Event – Ryan Riess Wins

On Tuesday, the historic 45th edition of the
World Series of Poker Main Event has finally been etched into the poker history books. The one who secured poker immortality, together with the top prize of $8.36 million and the champion’s bracelet was Ryan Riess, who defeated Jay Farber heads-up for the title.
Riess, a 23 year-old from Michigan, who will probably not have to worry about making a living ever again in his life, said in the wake of his victory that he had dreamt about the moment ever since he witnessed Chris Moneymaker take the title.
Although he lost on Tuesday, Farber did not go home empty-handed either: he took down a $5.17 million prize for his second place, so it’s safe to say he won’t ever have to worry about mundane financial issues either, although he may have to pay out some backers before being able to draw a bottom line.
At the beginning of the heads-up stage of the game, Farber had the larger stack, but Riess came into the last day on a mission. He focused and he made all the right moves, and he battled his way into the lead with some expert maneuvers. Had it not been for a somewhat against-the-flow-of-the-game double-up from Farber, Riess would’ve probably ended the game much faster as every meaningful pot seemed to land on his side of the table. The said double-up saw Farber hit a straight on the turn against Riess’ top pair to extend the lease on his tournament life. The setback did nothing to deflate Riess’ enthusiasm, who – at that point – had already figured out his opponent’s ways. He settled back into the grind, and soon, he was ahead again.
The final hand of the
poker tournament saw Farber’s Qs,5s go up against Riess’ Ah, Kh in a rather uneven battle. The flop fell Jd,10d,4c, and Riess was starting to look good indeed. The turn was the 3c and the river fell the 4d to wrap up the 2013 WSOP.
