2013 WSOP – Matthew Ashton Wins Event #55

The $50k Poker Players’ Championship has finally played down to its winner earlier today. Matthew Ashton was the one who took down the prestigious title and the $1.8 million that came with it. He bested Don Nguyen heads-up. Nguyen had been the chip leader of the poker tournament for its last couple of days.
The final day of the event (its 5th day) saw only the final table of 8 return to action. Everyone had his plan obviously and Jonathan Duhamel’s was to get his chips into the middle as soon as possible. As a result of that, he became the first victim of the final table, biting the dust on the 4th hand of the day.
Duhamel had a pair of Ks and an open-ended straight draw to go with it, but his PokerStars teammate George Danzer, had a two pair. The board failed to improve Duhamel’s hand and he was eliminated.

Mike Wattel followed him to the rail, followed in turn by Minh Ly. Benyamine was the one who sent Ly packing.
George Danzer couldn’t really put the chips he had picked up from Duhamel to good use: he hit the rail in 5th place, courtesy of Nguyen, who made a boat to beat his trips.
David Benyamine was the next player to bite the dust after a stretch of 4-handed action which lasted for about 3 hours. He picked up $497.1k for his efforts. John Hennigan was the next victim. His elimination in 3rd place set up the heads-up stage of the action. He was rewarded with $686.5k.
The final hand of the tournament, between Nguyen and Ashton, was a pretty interesting one: both players had top pair, but Ashton’s kicker was better. The runner-up picked up almost $1.1 million.
