2013 WSOP – Michael Gathy Wins Event #34

Event #34 went into the books today, well before event #32 managed to play down to its winner. Michael Gathy was the one who won the $1k
NL Holdem affair, taking home the bracelet and the $178.6k top prize.
Unlike most of the other
WSOP events, #34 only took two days to play down to its winner. The second day of action saw 35 players return to the tables, from an original starting field of 1,629.
Everyone was in the money already, so the stakes were about just how much money each of the survivors would take home. Jamie Rosen fell during the run-up to the final table in 33rd place. Other notables who bit the dust were Ognjen Secularec, who was bounced in 32nd place, Sam Greenwood and Jennifer Tilly, who made it all the way to 13th.
As the final table was reached, the pace of the action didn’t slow down at all. As a matter of fact, it only took the first victim of the home stretch of the event a single hand to hit the rail. Russell Crane picked up a pair of 8s and he pushed all-in, only to get a call from Jake Cody, who had pocket Js. The board did nothing to bail him out and the final table was no longer whole.
Noah Vaillancourt was the next one to be bounced, followed by Jake Cody, who couldn’t really put any of Russell Crane’s chips to good use. Jason Duval – one of the early chip leaders – finished 6th, followed to the rail by Daniel Bishop.
Sergey Ribachenko fell next, followed by Yueqi Zhu, who was the first player to climb over the 100k mark prize-wise. Thus, the heads-up stage between Gathy and Benjamin Reason was set. Gathy enjoyed a massive chip lead and he never allowed his opponent any breathing space.
