2013 WSOP – Mike Matusow Grabs Bracelet #4

About a minute ago, Mike Matusow has taken down his 4th WSOP bracelet, defeating Ashton Matthew heads-up for the win in event #13, the $5k Seven Card Stud Hi/Lo event of the
2013 WSOP. Matusow bested an initial starting field of 210 players to get to the goods in this one, but he navigated the final stages of the poker tournament masterfully, proving that he had been right indeed back in the days when he called himself “the master of the short-stack” in a rather inebriated state once.
Matusow picked up $266.5k for his win, after he bested a final table which included quite a few “name” competitors indeed. The first player to bite the dust at the 8-handed final table was Vladimir Shchemelev. He picked up $26.7k for his efforts. He was followed to the rail by Gavin Smith in 7th place and by Tony Cousineau in 6th. Yuval Bronshtein bit the dust in 5th place, setting up the 4-handed action which then dragged on for 79 hands. Eventually, someone had to go though and that someone was David Baker, who was rewarded with $79k, but who left the table feeling like a loser no doubt.
Mike Leah was the player whose elimination in 3rd place set up the heads-up stage of the
poker tournament. Leah was definitely a tough nut to crack: it took Matusow and Matthew two hours to get rid of him.
Matthew started the heads-up action with a 2-1 chip advantage, and being the birthday-boy, it looked like he was set up to gift himself a nice WSOP bracelet. “The Mouth” had other ideas though: even though he started with the shorter stack and found himself in a serious squeeze shortly after the heads-up action kicked off, he bounced back, evening the score and eventually taking the lead. The rest was WSOP history…
