2013 WSOP – Norbert Szecsi Wins Event #42

Another $1k NL Holdem event went into the books early today, event #42 of the 2013 WSOP. The winner was Hungary’s Norbert Szecsi, who walked away with the gold bracelet and the $345k prize that came with it. Szecsi has been playing professionally for a while, but his career tournament earnings of $137.2k were pretty much put to shame by this accomplishment.
Szecsi started the final day of action 3rd in chips and his luck got worse before it would get better. As the field played down to the final 6, he found himself the short-stack. He got into a classic coin-flip with start of the day chip leader Rory Mathews and he got lucky, catching a much-needed double-up. Szecsi was the one who pushed all-in before the flop, holding a K,Qo. Mathews tagged along with a pair of 6s. A K fell on the turn to give Szecsi the pot.
Not long after this hand, Szecsi got his chips into the middle again with pocket 9s against Martin Kirby’s pocket rockets. The first card to hit the board was another 9 to give the Hungarian the lead, and the last card was a 9 as well to give him quads.
He then moved on and hit a flush against Kirby in another hand to send him to the rail for good.

The final table was a 132-hand affair, which was all about Szecsi, who cruised into the heads-up stage with a 3-2 lead over Denis Gnidash. Sensing that Lady Luck had camped down by his side, Szecsi kept up the pressure and managed to bounce Gnidash in only 7 hands, after yet another lucky flop. Start of the day chip leader Rory Mathews busted in 5th. Chris DeMaci made it all the way to 3rd place.

PokerStars’ WSOP 2013 Main Event qualifiers are still running and they’re still awarding dirt-cheap packages for the biggest live poker event of the year.
