2013 WSOP – Shaffer Wins Event #53

The third day of event #53, another $1.5k NL Holdem tournament of the 2013 WSOP, was something of a fiasco in regards to determining a winner: the field failed to play down even to the heads-up stage during the allotted time-frame, so a 4th day was added to allow David Vamplew, Arttu Raekorpi and Brett Shaffer to finally decide the fate of the gold bracelet and that of the $665.3k top prize.
The final table of the event got off to a quick start on the 3rd day of the tournament, but the pace of eliminations slowly ground to a halt when the 5-handed stage was reached. Mike Watson held the lead at that point, but he eventually wouldn’t make the final 3 which got to return on day 4.

Of the initial starting field of 2,816 players, 3 guys returned on the last day. Well-known pro David Vamplew started the home dash with the largest stack, but Shaffer had almost as large a stack as his. Finland’s Arttu Raekorpi was the official short-stack at this stage, even though at one point during Day 3, ha came pretty close to knocking out Vamplew and thus setting the heads-up stage.
Holding less than half as many chips as his opponents, Raekorpi was under pressure to get something going early on Day 4. He did his best, but his best was only enough for 4 hands on Day 4. He got bounced by Shaffer, who thus managed to start the heads-up stage of the poker tournament with a bit of a lead.
As soon as the last stage of the event commenced though, Vamplew took the lead back. Shaffer would have none of that and soon he took the lead back, extending it quite a bit before the final hand came. Shaffer’s A,9 bested Vamplew’s pocket Qs to wrap up the event.
