2013 WSOP – Simeon Naydenov Wins Event #36

The third and final day of event #36, the $1.5k NL Holdem Shootout event of the
2013 WSOP, saw 12 players return to the tables, bent on playing down to a winner. When it was all said and done, that’s exactly what they had accomplished: Simeon Naydenov walked away with the title, pocketing a $326.4k prize to go with it. The bracelet was Naydenov’s first, although he had proven himself something of a
NL Holdem shootout specialist by finishing 10th in another major live event earlier this year.
Even though there were indeed only 12 players returning to the tables at the beginning of the day, the action was by no means smooth sailing for any of them: it took them about 7 hours to play down to the winner.
The action kicked off with two 6-handed tables, and the immediate goal was for two players to hit the rail before the official final table could be set. Nacho Barbero started out on a rather flimsy footing but he managed to catch a double-up to stay in contention. Vladimir Kochelaevskiy pushed all in with pocket 10s and got called by Salman Behbehani, who had pocket Ks. Kochelaevskiy got crippled there and on the next hand, he became the first victim of the day. Kevin Vandersmissen followed him to the rail. The next player to be bounced was Sumanth Reddy. As players were hitting the rail one after the other, Naydenov slowly emerged as a serious contender. Salman Behbehani got shoved out of the way during this stage of the event, and he was followed by Mike Watson. Eventually, it all came down to the heads-up bout between Naydenov and Jake Schwartz. The home dash of the event only took 10 hands at the end of which, Naydenov was crowned the winner.
