Event #18 of the
2013 WSOP is finally in the books and the winner is Taylor Paur, who overcame an initial starting field of 2,017 players to claim the gold bracelet and the $340.2k top prize. The final day of action saw 14 players return to the tables with Paur holding a massive stack. Having started in the lead, Paur never really gave it up, except for a few short stretches during the heads-up stage of the
poker tournament. Despite the fact that it was obviously Paur who should’ve garnered the most attention, the press had its eyes squarely on Phil Ivey in the beginning. Ivey eventually failed to make the official final table.
Having started off with the largest stack, Paur put his chips to use early on. He scored a double elimination about 13 hands into the final table, sending Ryan Austin and Kyle Cartwright to the rail in 8th and 9th places respectively and thus breaking the final table ice in style.
Daniel Idema was bounced in 7th place, followed to the rail by Phillip Hui in 6th. Hui didn’t get much going during the final day and the first time he attempted to get his hands on some chips, he ran into Alex Barlow’s pocket Qs.
DJ MacKinnon was eliminated in 5th place, followed to the rail by Alex Barlow in 4th.
When the 3-handed stage of the tournament was reached, Paur had already secured a massive lead over his opponents. He then extended that lead further, by getting Tai Nguyen to push all-in and bouncing him in 3rd place.
Even though he had 4 chips to every one of Weiss’ at the start of the heads-up bout, it took some see-sawing before Paur finally delivered the KO and picked up the title.
