2013 WSOP – Vladimir Shchmelev Wins Event #46

The last day of event #46, the $3k PLO Hi/Lo Eight or Better one of the 2013 WSOP went into the books earlier today, and the player who walked away with the goods in this one was Vladimir Shchmelev. Shchmelev picked up a $279k prize and a gold bracelet of course. A total of 17 players returned to the tables at the beginning of the day. The action got off to a fast start, and before the railbirds knew it, several players had hit the rail. The unofficial final table was reached before the second break.
Ari Engel was the first victim of the day. He came in on a short stack but he managed to double up before hitting the rail in 17th place. Joshua Weiland was the one responsible for his demise. Matthew Lansdon and Stephen Chidwick were bounced during this stage of the poker tournament as well.
Shchmelev’s big break came right before the final table was reached: he got into a massive war with John O’Shea and he took down a large pot which thrust him into the lead, conferring him some much-needed momentum that would eventually see him through all the way to the top. O’Shea had pocket rockets in the said hand and Shchmelev managed to crack them with a little bit of assistance from Lady Luck.

Ashly Butler took over when the final table was reached, and he held the chip lead all the way into the 3-handed stage of the event. There, he tripped up though and he was eliminated, becoming the first player to break into 6-figure territory prize-wise.
The heads-up stage of the poker tournament saw Mel Judah square off against Shchmelev. There was a little bit of back and forth between the two, but eventually it turned out to be a short affair. Judah was rewarded with $172.3k for his second place.

Full Tilt Poker is one of the better destinations for 2013 WSOP Main Event qualifiers.
