2013 WSOPE Main Event – Adrian Mateos Wins

The final day of the 2013 WSOP Europe’s Main Event saw 6 players return to the action, looking to play down to a winner. When it was all said and done, the one sitting with all the chips in play piled up in front of him was Spain’s Adrian Mateos, a 19-year old, whose poker career has thus certainly gotten off on the right foot.
Benny Spindler was the first victim of the 6-handed final table. He came into the last day of action 4th in chips, but he wanted to chip up at all cost and he made a bluff which got shot down by Jerome Huge. The pot he dropped there left him crippled and from there it only took him a few hands to bite the dust in 6th place, picking up €126k for his efforts.
The player who followed Spindler to the rail was Ravi Raghavan. His reward was €176k. The one responsible for his elimination was the eventual winner.

Undeterred by Spindler’s failure, Huge, the previous beneficiary of the German’s mistake, decided to live by the same sword and he made a massive bluff of his own, which got shot down too. Fabrice Soulier was the one who kept him honest.
Huge picked up €251k for his 4th place.
Dominik Nitsche’s elimination in 3rd place set up the heads-up stage of the poker tournament. Nitsche first got crippled by Mateos and the latter eventually moved in for the kill, sending him packing in 3rd, in possession of a €400k prize.

At the beginning of the heads-up bout, Mateos held a 4-1 chip advantage, but Soulier bounced back methodically chipping away at his opponent’s stack and at one point managed to grab the lead.
When he regained the chip lead, Mateos pulled away and never looked back: after a marathon heads-up session, he picked up the €1 million share of the winner.
