2014 Aussie Millions $25k Challenge – Max Altergott Wins

The second and final day of the Aussie Millions’ $25k Challenge event saw 30 players return to the tables, set to play all the way down to a winner. The player holding the largest stack at the beginning of the day was Fabian Quoss, but the one who walked away with the title, the bragging rights and the $241.7k top prize was Germany’s Max Altergott. The event took a rather surprising turn towards its end though, so while Altergott did indeed win, he was not the one to take home the largest prize. That honor went to Martin Jacobson, who pocketed $285.9k following a 5-way deal at the top.
The start of the day chip leader, Quoss, was bounced in 11th place. The one who put an end to his tournament life was
PokerStars pro Jason Mercier. The two players got their stacks into the middle before the flop and it turned out Quoss had an A,Qo against Mercier’s Ad, Jd. By the time the river card hit the board, Mercier had made a Broadway straight, and Quoss was done.
He was followed to the rail by Ole Schemion in 10th place, whose elimination finally allowed all the survivors to be seated at the same table. With only 8 places paid however, the money bubble had still not burst at that point.
The last player to go home empty-handed from the tournament was Benny Spindler. Spinder’s stack got wrecked by Tobias Reinkemeier, and even though he managed a triple-up and later a double-up to go with it, Spindler ultimately failed at the hands of Max Altergott. His elimination locked up a min-cash of AUD$55k for every one of the remaining players.
After only 5 remained standing, a straight ICM chop deal was reached.
The heads-up stage of the event saw Altergott best Dan Smith.
