2014 PCA: $100k High Roller – Day 1 Report

2013 ended up dominated by German players, at least as far as the high buy-in, live tournament action was concerned, and 2014 seems to have picked up just where 2013 left off in this respect. The first event of the 2014 PokerStars Caribbean Adventure is underway and after the first day of action, it is Germany’s Martin Finger, an EPT staple, who is leading the way with a stack of 829k chips. 52 players bought in on the first day, falling short of last year’s mark, but given that registration remains open till the beginning of the second day, that number may yet be tweaked upwards.
Finger is definitely no stranger to the green felt, especially when EPT events are concerned: he won the EPT’s Prague Main Event back in 2011 and just last year, he won the £50k High Roller of the London stop.

To further underline the continuing German domination of the high buy-in live tournament scene, Max Altergott finished the day second, with 707k chips to his name. Isaac Haxton had a good day too: he finished 3rd, with 594.5k chips. Bryn Kenney and Jason Koon followed in 4th and 5th places respectively.
Given that the field was made up almost exclusively of “name” competitors, it didn’t come as a surprise that all the survivors were notables. Outside the top 10, PokerStars pro Jason Mercier, Vanessa Selbst, Matt Glantz, Ole Schemion and Jonathan Duhamel made the cut as well.
Player of the Decade Daniel Negreanu wasn’t as lucky though. Together with Guy Laliberte, he was bounced twice and he re-bought every time, so he will end up having fired 3 bullets in the end, to what avail remains to be seen.
The defending champion of the event, Scott Seiver, made it to Day 2 too.
PokerStars offers its players a quick and cheap path to events like the 2014 PCA, through its online satellites.
