2014 PCA Main Event – Day 1A Report

Even as the final table of the $100k Super High Roller was winding down, the 2014 PCA’s Main Event kicked off with the first of its Day 1 flights. While not particularly impressive, the Day 1A turn-out was more than decent: 295 players showed up, and at the end of the day, 184 of them were still standing. The one who finished with the largest stack was Dylan Hortin, who had 160.5k chips bagged.
Given how many notables flew to the Bahamas for the PCA (despite the adverse weather and the travel problems), it wasn’t a surprise that quite a number of them found the path to the rail early in the Main Event.
Lex Veldhuis was one of the
PokerStars pros who fell victims to the early attrition. Vanessa Selbst was another. She may have logged a deep run in the Super High Roller, but the mojo didn’t carry over to the main event, obviously. She was joined on the rail by fellow PokerStars pro Mickey Petersen.
Petersen fell at the end of a “perfect hand”. He pushed his last chips into the middle on an A,Ko. He was called by Shai Zurr, who had pocket Ks.
The board fell all-blanks and Petersen was done.
Former NBA player Gilbert Arenas was among the victims of the first day of action too. The one who eliminated Arenas was none other than the end of the day chip leader, Hortin.
PokerStars pros Eugene Katchalov, Liv Boeree and Joseph Cheong on the other hand were among the survivors. The winner of the
2014 WSOP Main Event, Ryan Riess, was also among the survivors. Riess had a rollercoaster ride of a day, which saw him drop to about 10k chips early on, before rebounding, to finish with 16.5k.
