2014 PCA Open-Face Chinese Poker – Shaun Deeb Wins

Open-Face Chinese Poker has been gathering a lot of following – especially among the top poker professionals – lately, therefore it’s not exactly a surprise that a Series as high-profile as the
PokerStars Caribbean Adventure features an Open-Face Chinese poker event. The second edition of the event went into the books yesterday, and its winner was Shaun Deeb. Deeb faced a tough final table, which included his arch-nemesis Paul Volpe, the player who had denied Deeb his 6th SCOOP title last year.
This time around, Deeb was the one who came out victorious from the tangle. The
poker tournament, which drew a starting field of 53 players and which featured a prize-pool of more than $100k, saw several notables belly up to its tables at the start of the day.
Barry Greenstein, Dan O’Brien and Chris Klodnicki were all among the starters, unfortunately, none of them made any waves in the event, busting out before the money-bubble.
Despite the high rate of attrition among the top pros, a few of them made it to the final table: besides the eventual winner and Volpe of course, Jason Mercier, Jon Turner and Ben Yu made the final stretch of the event.
When it was down to the heads-up stage, it was Volpe against Deeb. Volpe didn’t miss the opportunity to try to get into his opponent’s head, bringing up his SCOOP victory, but Deeb was the one who held the chip lead and thus the advantage.
Volpe did fight back, and at one point he looked like he was mounting a comeback, but Deeb put an end to it, taking down the title and the $32.3k top prize.
Volpe was rewarded with $23.4k for his second place, while Ben Yu, the third place finisher, picked up $14.9k for his efforts.
Mercier and Turner ended up in 5th and 6th places respectively.
