2014 may not have been a particularly great year for
poker and online poker in general, but while some whittled away under the pressure of the tax obligations which came with legalized poker in the US, others had it great, and by others, we obviously mean Tony G, who has embarked on a political career which has already yielded some pretty promising results for the poker maverick. In all honesty however, Tony G’s success isn’t something positive for the game of poker and the poker industry, after all, the Australian-Lithuanian ex-pro left the game to build a career in politics.
On May 26, 2014, Guoga’s Liberal Movement party managed to secure some 16.5% of the votes in the Lithuanian parliamentary elections, something which gave the party 2 seats in the European Parliament, and – you’ve guessed it – one of those seats went to the former PartyPoker representative. Since then, Guoga has racked up quite a number of political accomplishments, becoming a member of a number of highly influential government committees in his home country.
Play at PartyPoker, one of the best destinations for poker tournament action in general and for live event qualifiers in particular.
The fall of Ultimate Poker was definitely one of the low-points of the year for the online poker world. Ultimate Poker was the first operator to attempt to take advantage of the freshly legalized US poker scene, and as such, it did indeed start off with a massive advantage over its potential competitors. The brand even secured the services of “name” pros like Antonio Esfandiari, but despite everything, the business model behind the operation – according to some of the insiders –was simply stale. The site first folded in New Jersey and then, in November, it ceased its operations in Nevada as well.
PartyPoker is definitely one of the best destinations for online poker tournaments and their promotions are quite peerless in the business.
