2014 WSOP Blasts Off

The first day of the 2014 edition of the World Series of Poker is in the books, and the starting ceremonies were spectacular indeed, worthy of the live poker extravaganza to follow. Before the first event, the cannons were fired and dollar bills rained down on the players waiting below.
The first event was – as usual – the $500 Casino Employees one, which was followed by event #2, the $25k Mixed –Max
NL Holdem one, which – in a rather unsurprising manner - drew a starting field almost exclusively made up of “name” professionals.
The first day of event #1 saw a breakneck pace imposed from the get-go. By the time the day wound down, there were only 51 players left standing. The one leading the pack is a Californian poker dealer, Corey Emery.

Despite the rabid action in the Casino Employees event, all eyes were squarely on event #2, where Vanessa Selbst rose to the top of the pops as the field played down to 60. Michael Mizrachi, a regular and past winner of the event, finished close to the top as well, together with fellow pro Brian Rast. Mizrachi finished 3rd with 399.3k chips to his name. Rast was second with 557.4k. The leader’s stack tipped the scales at 562.8k chips.
Daniel Cates made the top 10 as well, together with John Juanda and Stephen Chidwick. Cates finished the day in 6th place, with 317k chips to his name.
Outside the top 10, the field of survivors remained as impressive as the starting field had been at the beginning of the day. PokerStars’ Jason Mercier made it to Day 2, together with Phil Ivey and Sam Trickett.
