2014 WSOP – Main Event Kicks Off

The first Day 1 flight of the 2014 WSOP has kicked off indeed and the first provisional chip leader of the tournament has already surfaced. The high profile celebrity who made the “shuffle up and deal” call this year, marking the 10th anniversary of the WSOP at the Rio, was Joe Hachem.
Needless to say, Day 1A saw quite a number of “name” players belly up to the tables of the Big Dance. Greg Merson and Ryan Riess were seated at the feature table. Others, like PokerStars pro Jason Mercier, Phil Laak, Johnny Chan, Chris Moneymaker and Antonio Esfandiari played too, but gained less exposure for now.

The opening stages of the action marked a cautious approach form the field in general, thus the first players sent packing began hitting the rail around halfway through the second level.
Steven Sanzone was among the first victims of the day and the tournament. He was followed out the door by Bruno Fitoussi and Steven Gee, but Jean-Robert Bellande, Dave Swanson and David Chiu were all eliminated as well.
With so many “name” competitors in the field, it was not surprising that the chip lead was traded back and forth among players like Joe Broderick, Mukul Pahuja and Aaron Wilt. In the end though, Martin Jacobson was the one who ended up with the largest stack. The Swede had some 200.1k chips bagged.
Wilt finished with a more than healthy stack of 157.6k chips too. Seamus Cahill and Andy Hwang finished with decent stacks as well, as did Alex Simic.
The $10k PLO Championship event played down to its winner: Pat Walsh, while the Little One for One Drop played down to its final table.
