2015 WSOP "Colossus" Generating Quite a Bit of Hype

The
2015 WSOP is still far over the horizon in poker terms, but one of its early events, the $565 "Colossus", which is event #5 of the Series, is already generating quite a bit of hype. The event, which kicks off on May 29, is expected to see huge throngs of players descend on the tables. According to some estimates, at least 10,000 players will show up, but optimists think the turnout will exceed the 20,000 mark.
One of the most qualified sources, the WSOP's Vice President of Corporate Communications, Seth Palansky, estimates that the starting field will tip the scale at 24,600. Palansky said that he was getting "laughed out of the building", but frankly, he has access to more relevant information in this respect than anyone else. He knows how many people have pre-registered, he has access to the data produced by various contact points as well as past data in events like the Millionaire Maker and the Monster Stack.

The organizers are certainly setting the event up as a true monster: it will feature no fewer than 4 starting days, each of which will feature a pair of "late waves".
According to Palansky, the event will probably be a logistical nightmare for the organizers, but valuable lessons have been learned in last year's majors. Re-entries will be allowed in the event, but players will not be allowed to re-enter the same flight. Once someone survives a flight and keeps his chips, he will not be allowed to re-enter another flight. At the beginning of each flight, 4-4.6k players will be allowed in, then an additional 750 and then 1k more.
