2015 WSOP Main Event Payout Structure Altered

The controversial $10 million winner’s guarantee is gone from the 2015 Main Event of the World Series of Poker, at least according to the latest news coming from WSOP executive director Ty Stewart. Obviously, this may still change till the Big Dance kicks off this summer, but at this point, such a reversal is not highly likely.
The $10 million deal – introduced last year - came under a lot of criticism from the
poker community, criticism mostly focused on the way the massive share of the winner impacted the rest of the payout structure. Last year’s champion, Martin Jacobson, picked up $10 million for his efforts, while the runner-up, Felix Stephensen, had to settle for a little over half as much: $5.14 million. The 9th place finisher, Mark Newhouse was only rewarded with $730.7k. Those who finished further down the ladder obviously fared even worse.

The new payout structure will make the event much more attractive for the masses, offering them the best odds ever to leave the tables as winners. Indeed, using the 2014 field and prize-pool as a starting point, the new payout structure generates a much better distribution of money across the board. This way, the winner would “only” get $8 million, while the runner-up would be rewarded with $4.66 million. 3rd place would be $3.5 million and so on…suffice to say that everyone in the top 9 (the official final table), would get at least $1 million.
According to the new payout structure, the top 1,000 finishers will all be guaranteed a payday of at least $15k. To put that into perspective: in last year’s Main Event, the last paying place was 693rd place and it was worth $16.7k.
