2015 WSOP Main Event Preview - Starting-field Expectations

As the largest live poker festival of the year is looming ever closer on the horizon, it is now time to take a look at how the Main Event is likely to shape up this year, more precisely, on whether or not it will manage to buck the trend set by the last few editions and feature a biggest starting field than last year's.
Starting with 2011, the starting field of the Big Dance began to shrink. Last year finally broke the trend, featuring a 5% increase over the previous edition and the 2015 Main Event is expected by some to capitalize on that rebound, further increasing participation. The WSOP as a whole is a great measure of the health of the overall poker/
online poker world, but within it, the Main Event is what essentially confirms/contradicts the signals generated by the other events.

To this day, the WSOP Main Event attendance-record is held by the 2006 Main Event, which saw 8,773 players belly up to its tables. 2006 was the year when the infamous Jamie Gold walked away with the biggest prize awarded in the history of the event. Last year saw 6,683 players put up the buy-in, marking a rather significant rebound from 2013's 6,352 players.
Now then, exactly what the 2014 spike was due to is arguable: some say the $10 million guaranteed share of the winner was to "blame" for it, while others are more optimistic, attributing the development to an overall improvement in the "poker economy".
From a strictly statistical perspective, 2015 is set to underwhelm...after all, several signals (like the one generated by the Aussie Millions Main Event) say attendance will indeed drop. There are some interesting payout changes lined up though, and these may indeed turn out to be game-changers.
