2016 PCA Main Event - Day 5 Report

The 5th day of the 2016 edition of the PokerStars Caribbean adventure went into the books on Wednesday, with 19 players of the original 928 runners returning to the tables. The chip leader was Brazil's Leonardo Pires, who had amassed a truly massive stack of chips indeed and who was looking to ride this advantage right into the home stretch of the poker tournament. Although a major mathematical favorite, Pires blew his chance, and to everyone's surprise, he became one of the 13 players who bit the proverbial dust on Day 5. The one who took over in his place was Mike Watson, who accumulated 6.58 million chips. From among the other players who have successfully navigated the troubled waters of Day 5, Tony Gregg stands out as the only player ever to have made the final table of the PCA Main Event three times.

Gregg finished with a very healthy stack no less: he had 5.68 million chips bagged, so he may in fact theoretically go all the way still. Others who have made the cut are Vladimir Troyanovskiy (with a little over 5 million chips), Phillip McAllister (with 3 million), Randy Kritzer (2.57 million) and Toby Lewis (4.66 million).
Besides Gregg, Troyanovskiy is something of a record-setter at the final table as well. His current accomplishment made him the first ever player to make the final tables of the PCA Main Event, the $100k Super High Roller and the $25k High Roller.
Pires' exit from the action came in 13th place. Watson was the one responsible for his demise.
