2016 WSOP Kicks Off

The 2016 edition of the world's biggest live poker festival, the World Series of Poker, has kicked off yesterday, with its traditional opener, the $565 Casino Employees NL Holdem tournament. This year, there are a total of 69 events on the WSOP schedule, so there will be plenty of action and indeed plenty of opportunities for recreational players and professionals alike to make poker history. The Casino Employees event was played according to single re-entry rules this year. Some 731 entries were in the middle when the line was drawn. The event got off to a quick start and it never looked back. When the action was called at the end of the first day, only 23 players were left in contention, the money-bubble a distant memory. The resulting prize-pool was a $365.5k one, and some 110 places would end up getting paid. The winner of the tournament would walk away with a $75.1k prize and the first gold bracelet of this year's Series.

Spencer Bennett from California was the one who grabbed the lead at the end of the day. He had some 627k chips bagged. His stack was by far the biggest too: second-place finisher Kerryjane Craigie only had 323k chips. Nick Sliwinski's presence in the top 3 was a pleasant surprise for many. Sliwinski, who had made it all the way to 13th place in the 2008 Main Event, had 301k chips bagged. Since his 2008 Main Event dash, Sliwinski hasn't really created any waves at the WSOP. That time though, he took down $436.2k.
The first open event of the 2016 WSOP (and the second one of the Series), the $565 Colossus II, is set to kick off today.
