The November Nine has been set and nine lucky and skilled players will now have to wait till fall to decide the eventual winner. Here’s a closer look at some of the people who will be the protagonists of the final stretch of the Main Event.
The current chip leader, with a massive stack of 43.8 million chips is Jesse Sylvia. Sylvia is a 26 year old professional poker player who played online and became quite successful at the game before moving to Las Vegas and taking up live poker. He doesn’t consider himself a tournament specialist and he doesn’t plan on playing in many tournaments till November 9. He considers Phil Ivey to be the best poker player in the world and he attributes Ivey’s success to what he calls a ‘trial and error’ way of learning the subtleties of the game.
Andras Koroknai, currently second in chips is a 30-year old player from Debrecen, Hungary, who has been playing professionally for quite a while. Indeed, those who follow the live tournament circuit are pretty much certain to have heard of him before. He has two WSOP cashes to his name. He played in the 2010
WSOP Main Event too, where he was bounced in 339th place. He played in various WPT events too: in 2010, he won the WPT LA Poker Classic for a $1.7 million reward.
In an interview following the setting of this year’s November Nine, he said he regretted that the field was not allowed to play down to a winner right there and then as he felt he was in a great shape.
Greg Merson already has a bracelet: he won the $10k NL Holdem Six-handed event at the 2012 WSOP. The Laurel, Maryland native has around $2 million in live tournament winnings under his belt, counting the money he’s already guaranteed in the Main Event for having made the final table.
