A Closer Look at the 2014 WSOP Schedule

The 2014 WSOP schedule has been released and the time to nibble a bit on some of its ins and outs is here. The festival kicks off with the traditional Casino Employees event and it wraps up with the $10k Main Event, so there aren’t any surprises there. Of course, there are plenty of surprises in the schedule, in-between those above said two events, and even within the Main Event, which – for the first time – is out to make sure that its winner walks away with a prize for the record books. The winner is essentially guaranteed a $10 million payday, which – according to some – may turn out to be a good thing, while – according to others – it will end up essentially penalizing those who finish in the money but fail to go all the way.
Indeed, people finishing in the money will be short-changed, although probably by not as much as one may think. Considering last year’s prize-pool a starting point, it looks like those finishing within the money but outside the final table, will lose about 3% of their money. November Niners will have to take a larger cut though: they’ll lose between 4-5%.
The $10 million guarantee will essentially turn the tournament’s payout structure into a top-heavy affair, and as such, those barely sneaking into the money will barely be affected.
There are voices out there calling for the guarantee to be placed on the prize-pool instead of on the winner’s share, which would of course be a solution, but it would fail to achieve a several marketing goals the current setup fulfills.
The return of the championship events is a welcome move indeed. The
2014 WSOP will feature no fewer than 12 events with buy-ins of $10k, covering a truly impressive range of poker variants.
