With the October Nine showdown ready to kick off, the time has never been better to take a look at some of the moments which defined the shape and makeup of the final table. Andras Koroknai, is the experienced Hungarian pro who will start the final table second in chips, thus in a pretty excellent position indeed. Although he may look like one of the top candidates for the title now, Koroknai had a close brush with elimination in a hand which called for a decision on the part of WSOP officials. That decision was one that has split the poker world with some supporting it while others oppose it.
The hand in question saw Baumann fire out a 60k raise, in response to which, Koroknai pushed all-in. Gavin Smith, the BB, got out of the way, at which point, believing that he had forced everyone off the pot, Koroknai tossed his hand into the muck. He quickly realized his mistake and pulled one of his cards back, but the other one was gone for good. Tournament director Dennis Jones quickly came to the table, and he made the decision to give Baumann 60k of Koroknai’s chips and to let the Hungarian continue with the remainder of his chips.
The decision was obviously a disputed one because many argued that Koroknai gave up all his chips by folding there, but there’s a
WSOP rule covering just this sort of issues, and that was the rule applied by tournament officials.
Later on, Koroknai locked horns with Baumann again, on the bubble of the final table, and he proceeded to knock her out, setting the October Nine.
