A look back at the WSOP’s final table

With the 2010 WSOP’s final table behind us, it is time to take a look back and analyze some of the stats generated by the November 9. A total of 219 hands were played before the heads-up action commenced. What these hands clearly tell us now in hindsight is that Joseph Cheong was the most active and in the same time the most aggressive player too. He put money into the pot voluntarily a massive 34.25% of the time. He was also a 20.55% preflop raiser. His preflop 4-betting percentage, at 2.28% was also the biggest one at the final table. Being eliminated in 3rd place, he did play through all 219 hands.
While Cheong’s elimination in 3rd may be viewed by some as proof that at the end of the day aggression doesn’t pay, it is merely the exception that strengthens the rule. You see, the only person to come close to Cheong in terms of aggression was the eventual winner, Jonathan Duhamel himself, who put money into the pot voluntarily 30.14% of the time and had a preflop raising rate of 20.55%. While he didn’t get involved in any 4-betting before the flop, his preflop 3-betting rate was a head and shoulder above everyone else’s, at 6.85%.

Interestingly enough, second place man John Racener’s numbers weren’t all that impressive. He only put money into the pot of his own will 23.29% of the time, barely twice as much as Filippo Candio’s final table low of 12.23%. He didn’t raise, 3 bet or 4 bet that much preflop either.

Jason Senti was the obvious champion of all-in shoves. As a matter of fact, over the first 14 hands of the final table, he shoved all-in 4 times. Altogether, he got it all into the middle 10 times, the last one being his undoing. On the other end of the spectrum stood Michael Mizrachi, who didn’t even get involved in the action until the 16th hand.
