The $162,521 first prize and the bracelet the 2-7 Triple Draw event offered had been contested over the first two days of the event by a motley crew which included world champions, poker writers and gamblers.
By day 3, the initial starting field had whittled down to 9 players, Abe Mosseri leading them as far as the provisional chip count was concerned. By the day’s end, Mosseri would prove successful at fending off all challengers, and he would pose for the winner’s photo with a wide grin on his face.
Given the fact that 2-7 Triple Draw is a 6-handed game, final day play commenced at 2 tables. The first elimination of the day was Nam Le, who hit a bad streak, losing 2 consecutive hands to hit the rail in 9th place. In the first hand, Masayoshi Tanaka forced him to fold on the second draw. That pretty much cost Le his entire stack. What he had left was barely enough to pay the BB on the next hand. He took 3 cards on the first draw and shoved all-in against Hertel Zalewski. Zalewski stood pat on the last draw, and he shoved 10,9,8,4,2 against Le’s K,5,4,3,2 to eliminate him.
The elimination offered precious little fuel for Zalewski to continue, and sure enough, he became the next one to hit the rail. Brad Libson stood pat on the last draw of the hand, hitting a 9,8,7,5,3 to scoop the pot and to send Zalewski after Le.
Kris Lord’s elimination set the official final table. Blair Rodman had him crippled before Abe Mosseri delivered the decisive blow.
As the 6-handed final table kicked off, Brad Libson held a flimsy chip lead over Blair Rodman.
Julie Schneider was the short-stack, with 207,000 chips.
Despite the odds, it was Brad Libson who bled his chips away and busted out first from the final table. Julie Schneider, the short-stack was the one who delivered the final blow. Blair Rodman, the other large-stack followed Libson to the rail shortly, his stack traveling over to John Juanda’s side of the table.
Juanda then got it all-in against Abe Mosseri, and even though he was looking good with 8,6,2, he picked up some high cards on the last two draws and he was done in 4th place, good enough for $44,941.
The final three players got into a three way tussle which eventually resulted in Julie Schneider’s elimination in 3rd place. Mosseri ended up taking down that pot, and Julie Schneider just beat her personal record for a cash finish in a live tournament.
The heads-up action started with Tanaka enjoying a marginal chip lead over Mosseri. It didn’t take Mosseri long to tip the scale his way though. The final hand of the event started with Tanaka’s raise. Mosseri three-bet him and Tanaka made the call. Mosseri led out after the first draw and Tanaka called him again. The money went all-in after the second draw, by that time though, Mosseri had secured a 7,6,5,3,2 and Tanaka was done in second place, picking up $102,313 for his efforts.
