Angel Guillen wins $2,000 NL Holdem event

Event #32 of the 2009 WSOP, the $2,000 Limit Holdem one, attracted an initial field of 1,534 registrants, who combined buy-ins for a total prize-pool of $2,791,880.
Only 220 players survived day 1. With the money bubble set to 171st place, 19 players survived day 2 to belly up to the tables on the final day and to decide who the next WSOP champion and bracelet bearer would be.
Angel Guillen from Mexico was the player still standing when the dust settled in the wake of the final table action. Having eliminated Mika Paasonen heads-up, Guillen managed to secure the bracelet and the $530,548 first prize, only a few days after a second place finish and another nice cash in the $2,500 NL Holdem event.

As usual, the short-stack was the one who got bounced first. Johan Dunder came into day 3 with the fewest chips and he bit the dust within 10 minutes of the kick-off, when his A,J got called by Neng Lee’s pocket Ks and failed to improve. Matthew Waxman was eliminated too, followed to the rail by Neng Lee.
Peter Feldman busted in 11th, allowing the rest of the players to condense to a single table. The title of final table bubble-boy went to David Vu though, whose A,9 ran into Jason Boyes’ pocket 10s, and even though he managed to spike an A on the river, Vu had already secured the hand by then, having landed a 10 on the turn.

The first victim of the official final table was Clark Hamagami, whose A,8o was not enough to stand up to Angel Guillen’s Ac, Kc on a board of K,8,J,Q,A.
Antoine Amourette followed him to the rail as the rest of the players survived to the dinner break.
Chris MacNeil was the first to succumb after the dinner break, followed shortly by Daniel Makowsky. 5th place went to Eric Ladny, who was eliminated by Guillen as the Mexican kept building his stack for the heads-up action.

Steve Kohner’s pocket Js went up against Angel Guillen’s A,K next, as the very first card to land on the table was a K. That pretty much decided Kohner’s fate, who picked up $10,761 for his 4th place.
Jason Boyes, the start of the day chip leader tangled with Mika Paasonen next, but his 8,10 was not enough to beat the Finn’s A,8 and the heads-up stage was set.
Both players involved started the heads-up action on relatively deep stacks and that meant none of them would rush into anything hasty. Sure enough, the action lasted for almost 5 hours before the final blow was struck, and before Guillen had his arms raised in victory. The final hand of the event saw Paasonen’s Kd, 10d go up against Guillen’s 3,3. The flop came 3,4.K. The turn was an A and the river was a 2.
