ANZPT Auckland – Day 1A Report

66 players bellied up to the tables of the SkyCity Auckland Casino on the first of two planned day 1 flights of the ANZPT’s New Zealand stop. 26 of these players managed to secure their seats for Day 2, with Angie Fitzgerald leading the pack. Fitzgerald secured her ANZPT seat through an online qualifier and on Day 1A she took an interesting approach to the action: she played as many hands as she could. While such an approach is generally doomed to fail, this time it worked out just fine, allowing her to finish the day with a stack of 113.5k chips. She was the first player to cross the 6-figure mark and she never looked back.
Several players who did well in past editions of the event were on hand, playing on Day 1A. Michael Guzzardi was one of them. Ashley Warner and Paul Hockin played as well. All the above said players managed to survive and to advance to Day 2.
Other players who finished with healthy stacks were Graeme Putt, Cole Swannack and Ivan Zalac. Of course, the
poker tournament yielded plenty of losers as well. Leo Boxell, a regular in these events, failed to make it to day 2. He was joined on the rail by Jackson Zheng and Jesse McKenzie.
Brooke Howard-Smith was the one responsible for the eliminations of Liam O’Rourke and Jesse McKenzie.
O’Rourke got all his chips into the middle with a 9h,10h. He got called by Howard-Smith, with pocket 8s, when the flop was already on the table and there was another 8 there.
McKenzie got his chips into the middle having secured a top pair on the flop. Howard-Smith had a two pair by then though, and the board didn’t bail McKenzie out.
