ANZPT Auckland – Day 1B Report

While the Day 1A starting field of the ANZPT’s Auckland Main Event was by no means an impressive one, Day 1B managed to underperform it: 56 players showed up for the action at the SkyCity Casino’s tables, looking to earn a pass to day 2. Despite the shallow nature of the player-pool, there were a few “name” players among the starters.
Aaron Benton, the winner of the ANZPT’s 2009 Sydney Main Event, played, together with Sam Razavi, the 2012 ANZPT Melbourne Main Event winner, and Mishel Anunu also of ANZPT fame. Day 1B proved to be especially hard on “name” competitors though, considering that none of the above said 3 players managed to survive.
Others who were forced to head to the rail, tail between legs, were John Harmon and Dean Francis. Didier Guerin had a tough day as well. He eventually put all his chips into the middle on an Ah, Jh, and found a caller who had A,Ko. The flop did give Guerin a glimmer of hope in the shape of a J which fell, but the turn was a K and his day was over.
Harmon got his chips into the middle on a flop of 10h,8c,7h, together with 3 other players. He had a top pair, while one of the other players had pocket Ks and the third had straight and flush draws. The river filled the third guy’s straight draw and Harmon’s
poker tournament was over too.
Aussie poker pro Charles Caris was the one who finished with the largest stack. He had 108.9k chips bagged at the end of the day. He barely edged out Marc Wittkopf for the lead though: Wittkopf finished with 108.6k chips to his name.
24 players remained standing at the end of the day.
