9 players returned to the tables of the SkyCity Auckland Casino on the 5th day of the ANZPT’s Auckland Main Event, with the goal of playing down to a winner. At the end of the day, there was indeed only one player left standing: Geoff Smith had all the chips piled up in front of him and NZ$80.5k in his pocket as he smiled for the cameras, showing off the pocket hand which had won him the final hand of the
poker tournament.
Jamie Mulligan was the one who started the day with the largest stack, but none of the other final table participants were willing to go down without a fight. The first player to bite the dust was Patrick Healy, the official short-stack of the final table. Healy ran his pocket 7s into Pravin Harji’s pocket Js for the bust.
The first level of action saw two more players bite the dust: Xiaodong Xia and Graeme Putt were both short-stacks. Putt saw his A,K beaten by Monica Eastick’s pocket 8s while Xia’s pocket Js fell to Jamie Mulligan’s pocket rockets.
Miroslav Sheynin was the next player to head to the rail. He was sent there by the eventual winner, Geoff Smith, who crippled him for good. Pravin Harji swooped in then to finish him off.
Mulligan was the next player to bow out. His last hand saw his Ks, 4s fall to Monica Eastick’s pocket rockets. Eastick’s joy over the elimination didn’t last long though: she was the first player to head to the rail after the break. Harji was eliminated in 3rd place, setting up the heads-up stage of the event.
Smith held a massive chip lead going into the heads-up bout and he wasn’t going to leave his advantage unexploited. He disposed of his opponent in under 20 minutes.
