ANZPT Melbourne – Paul Hockin Wins

The final table stage of the ANZPT’s Melbourne Main Event started out slowly and cautiously as players jostled for position for the first two levels. Soon however, patience running thin, they were all ready to jump into the fray, thus the eliminations began. The first one to bite the dust was Peter Matusik. His elimination was something of a surprise development, since he had started the day second in chips. The one responsible for his demise was Michael Guzzardi.
Anthony Aston was quick to follow him to the rail only a few hands later. Paul Hockin was the one who got his hands dirty this time.

After Aston’s elimination, an interesting situation occurred: three players got all their chips into the middle: Karan Punjabi was the one to initiate the confrontation. He was called by Ashley Warner and Igal Augarten. The flop read J,J,9 and Augarten was holding Ad, Qd, while Warner had pocket Ks. Punjabi had a couple of 8s. No help came on the turn or the river for the two players behind Warner’s pocket Ks and they both headed to the rail.
After that hand, Warner grabbed a massive chip lead, comfortably settling at the helm of the poker tournament.
Ismail Ismail was the next player to bite the dust. Lo Guidice, the one responsible for Ismail’s elimination, was sent to the rail shortly after.

Down to three players, the survivors decided to strike a deal, which saw the prize-pool chopped up according to stack sizes. In the wake of the deal, the battle for the top spot took up more than 3 hours. Hockin was the eventual winner, but the player collecting the biggest payout was Ashley Warner. Warner ended up with AUD$123k, while the winner only took home AUD$101k.
