ANZPT Queensland – Day 1A Report

The first of three day 1 flights scheduled for the ANZPT’s Queensland Snowfest Main Event saw a record-breaking starting field of 51 players belly up to its tables. As a matter of fact, the starting field was capped at 51, that’s why there weren’t more day 1A registrants. Last year, a total of 127 players registered for the same event, which means that if the pace doesn’t drop, this year’s event is sure to beat last year’s participation.
At the end of the day, all but 27 of the 51 participants were eliminated. Australia’s David Allan clinched the chip lead.
David Allan’s lead was cemented late in the day, when he took down a huge pot from Richard Lancaster. A lot of money went into the middle on the turn of a board of 10h,7d,3h,4c, but both players had chips left. The 5s which fell on the river proved to be an extremely tricky card as it put a straight draw onto the table. Lancaster fired out yet another bet which Allan called. It turned out that Lancaster had nothing but an A-high (he had Ah, Qh in his pocket), but Allan didn’t have a lot more either. Still, the pair of 5s which his A,5 gave him was enough to secure him the pot and with it, the provisional chip lead.
The day 1A starting field was rife with ‘name’ players from the Australia/New Zealand region. Well-known for his
online poker accomplishments, Allan was joined at the tables by Tristan Bain, Daniel Nielson, Michael Egan and Minh Nguyen. David Wonson also played and he finished with a rather respectable stack too. Michael Kanaan, the 2011 winner of the ANZPT’s Sydney Main Event also survived the day 1A hurdle. Other noteworthy survivors were Greg Familton, Ryan Boswell, Fergus Spary and Andrew Hinrichsen.
Last year’s event was won by Germany’s Marcel Schreiner, who took home NZD$ 94.3k for his efforts.
