ANZPT Sydney – Day 1A Report
Posted by: James Carter. - Fri, 2012-03-23 08:00
The first event of the ANZPT’s 4th season got going with the first day 1 flight of the Sydney Main Event. 214 players coughed up the buy-in on the first day of action, an extremely impressive turn-out by ANZPT standards. Last year, the total number of participants in the event was 393 and given how the majority of those looking to take part save themselves for the second day 1 flight, that number may well be overshadowed this year.
98 players survived the first day’s attrition. Tobin Ryall made it to the final whistle with the largest stack. He did well all through the day as he added to his stack every now and then. The biggest pot he took down came at the end of a pair of deuces he’d picked up. The board gave him a set and it paired too to land him a boat and eventually the pot too.
Nabil Egtton played well too. He was followed in the end of the day chip counts by Gordon Huntley and Rhys Gould.
There were quite a few notables in the field and quite a few of them bit the dust before the day was over. Tom Grigg was one of the victims. He was joined on the rail by Daniel Neilson, Aaron Benton, David Steicke, Grant Levi and Andrew Hinrichsen. Jonathan Karamalikis couldn’t avoid a trip to the rail either. The 2012 APPT Sydney champ started out well and he even managed to clinch the chip lead at one point, but his luck turned around then. The hand that started him down the slippery slope of elimination was a classic coin-flip, featuring his pocket Js and an opponent’s A,K. He still had chips left after that hit though, the majority of which found their way into the middle on a Q,10 which then missed several draws to leave him hanging on by a thread.
A few hands later he pushed all-in and his
poker tournament life was over.
Billy Argyros, Oliver Speidel, Tony Hachem and Dan Kelly will all return on day 2.
