APPT Auckland Day 4 – title stays in New Zealand

The PokerStars APPT’s New Zealand Main Event is over and the title stays home. Following a heads-up showdown with Gerome Guitteau, New Zealand’s own Simon Watt took down the title and the NZD 209,085 that came with it.
Day 4 began rather cautiously. Thanks to an APPT rule which says that the blinds level should be wound back to allow each player to start at least 40 BBs deep at the final table, short-stacks felt no pressure early on.
Michael Shinzaki proved to be the catalyst for early action. The American was extremely aggressive, looking to take advantage of the relative calm at the table. Richard Lancaster however caught him red-handed on a bluff and sent him to the edge of extinction.
Jerome Guitteau was the one who delivered the final blow and Shinzaki departed in 9th place, having become the first victim of the final table.

Lance Climo, who had held the chip lead at one point in the tournament, was the next casualty. Left with a short-stack, he decided to push all-in holding A,10o, only to be called by Watt who had A,Ko in his pocket. The board fell a K-high rainbow and Climo was done in 8th.
Assadour Assadourian ran his Q,Jo into Gerome Guitteau’s 7c,8c on a flop of J,7,8 and never managed to catch up.
Jens Walther proved to be the master of the short-stack at the final table, but even the master himself couldn’t avoid being bounced after a while. Guitteau took care of him in 6th place.

Lancaster bit the dust in 5th place. He got his money in well, on an Ac,Kc against Guitteau’s Ah, Qh. Guitteau proceeded to hit a Broadway straight on the river though to send another local packing.
Guitteau didn’t stop there. He kept on rolling and because Ke Sijia got in his way he bounced him too, in 4th place. Sijia had a pair of 10s and a flush draw against Guitteau’s made flush. Jason Brown was bounced by Watt in third.
Watt then proceeded to cripple Guitteau heads-up and a few hands later he eliminated him, grabbing the PokerStars APPT title.
