APPT Cebu – Day 3 Report

The APPT’s Cebu Main Event saw 28 players return to the tables on its 3rd and penultimate day. The stakes were quite obvious: with everyone in the money, the goal was to play down to the final table of 9. Amit Varma started the day with a ridiculously massive chip lead, of which he took full advantage, thus when the final whistle was blown, he was still atop the leader board holding an advantage of around 300k chips over the second-place man.
There were still quite a few ‘name’ players in the field at the beginning of the day, but in order for the final 9 to emerge, the majority of them had to bite the dust, there were no two ways about it. Kitty Kuo was one of the early casualties of the day, biting the dust in 23rd place. Alvin Cheam and Chris Edgar followed her to the sidelines in 20th and 19th places respectively. Sammy Huang held on as long as he could, but he was forced to admit defeat in 16th place. Bobo Chen was a touch more successful: he made it all the way to 14th. Carter Gill busted out in 13th, failing to get close to the coveted final table spot of the
poker tournament.
As the final table bubble approached, the action slowed down as it usually happens under such circumstances. Jacky Wang and Antoine Amourette provided the entertainment for this period of lull: they got their chips into the middle on a Q,Q vs J,J match-up. Amourette landed a set on the river, but the same card which filled his set, gave his opponent a straight and the pot.
The final table bubble burst a few hands later, when Sungsik Bae succumbed to Alistair Duff. Bae had a Q,J against Alistair’s A,8o. The flop landed an A right away, ending the suspense and setting the final table.
Nicholas Wong made the final table too as the official short-stack, behind a stack of 142k chips.
