After the Warm-up event of the Asia Championship of Poker, a second one went into the books on Sunday: the HK$8k Ladies Asia Championship, which saw Jay Tan of Hong Kong walk away with the title and the HK$65.2k prize.
Only 21 players bought into the
poker tournament, which meant that only the top 5 would finish in the money.
Although the player turnout wasn’t exactly impressive, being able to attract 21 female players was still quite an achievement for the organizers in Asia, where the game is still in its incipient phase.
The first lady to bite the dust after the money-bubble, and thus the first one to take home money was Japan’s Asako Matsunaga, who walked away with a prize of HK$12.9k. She was followed to the rail by Mariko Kinoshita, also from Japan, whose 4th place was worth HK$19.6k.
Lacey Jones of the US was the highest finishing notable: she made it all the way to third place, picking up HK$26.1k for her efforts. Her elimination set up the heads-up stage of the event between the eventual winner, Jay Tan and the eventual runner-up, Canada’s Xiao Peng.
Tan’s first ever career win came in the nick of time: pregnant, she made a pledge to win a title before she gave birth in order to make it a birthday present for her baby girl. With this win, she has indeed accomplished that objective.
The final hand of the heads-up stage of the tournament saw a flop of 7h,6d,5c hit the board before the chips went into the middle. Peng tabled an 8,5o for the bottom pair. Tan though showed down an 8d, 4d for the straight, and it was pretty much all over right there and then, given that Peng had the shorter stack. The Jd and the Kd which fell on the turn and the river added insult to injury, giving Tan a diamond flush.
