APPT Manila Day 1B report

Day 1B of the Asia Pacific Poker Tour’s Manila stop featured a marginally smaller starting field than Day 1A, but there were more “name” pros in the lineup. John Phan, Nali Kaselias, Carter Gill, J.J Liu and Eddy Sabat were all among the 136 players who took to the felt at day’s start. Miss Earth, Priscilla Meirelles was also playing, and she finished the day having accumulated a respectable-size stack to start Day 2 with.

By the end of Day 1B, the chip lead had been clinched by Natasha Ellis, who became the first player in the tournament to exceed the 100,000 chip mark.

One of the early bust-outs of the day was David Steicke who met his demise at the hands of Eddy Sabat. Steicke moved all-in on a board of 2,2,5,2 and a blank on the river, only to be called by Sabat who held A,J for the A-high. At showdown, Steicke couldn’t produce the goods, and thus he became one of the early casualties of Day 1B.

John Phan has also found the path to the rail when he shoved all-in on the turn of a board comprised of Qd,7d,9h,2h, with a pocket hand of 7h,8h probably looking to make a flush rather than just hammer his low pair home. Unfortunately for him, the guy who made him shove, Henrik Hvidberg, had a pair of Ks in his pocket, and the 3c which landed on the river sealed Phan’s fate.

One of the most interesting hands of the day involved the players ranked 1st and 2nd on the eventual leader board. Van Marcus got Natasha Ellis to call his all-in on a board of 3,Q,6,9,9, holding pocket rockets. Ellis did call him and then mucked, giving Van Marcus a boost which propelled him to the top of the provisional chip leader board.

Later on however, Natasha sent no fewer than 3 players to the rail in a single hand, regaining the chip lead for good.
The day wrapped up with Ellis in the lead (112,100), followed by Van Marcus in second (69,700), and Jeppe Drivsholm in third (65,400).
