APPT Manila Day 2 report

Posted by: James Carter. - Sun, 2008-11-16 14:20

The Hyatt Hotel and casino in Manila saw the return of 77 survivors from Day 1A and Day 1B of the Asia Pacific Poker Tour’s Manila stop. The starting field included Nali Kaselias, Celina Lin, David Saab, James Obst and the previous two days’ chip leaders, Chang Tong Suk, Michael Shell and Natasha Ellis.

Van Marcus was there too, as he set the pace of the action early on. He got extremely lucky in a couple of big hands, and managed to clinch the provisional chip lead early in the day. In one of these two huge hands, he got all-in against Daniel Nordstrom on a couple of 3s against the latter’s 10,10, on a board of 7,10,A,3. While hitting a one-outer is not something one sees every day at any poker table, that is just what happened on the river as a 4th 3 fell for Marcus sending Daniel Nordstrom to the rail wondering what he had done to offend Lady Luck to this degree.

A few hands later, Marcus got into a tussle with David Saab, and managed to trap him all-in on a K,K vs A,J match-up. The board ran 4,9,10,7,4 and that meant the end of the tournament for Saab too, adding another huge stack to Marcus’ already towering assets.

Other high-profile eliminations before the bubble burst were those of James Obst, Priscilla Meirelles and Michael Chrisanthopoulos.

The bubble burst via two simultaneous eliminations, those of Xiaogang Lin and Celina Lin, saving the remaining players the agony of the bubble play.
Van Marcus’ luck would hold out nicely after the bubble as he continued consolidating his stack with another luck-driven win which sent two opponents packing: James Broom and Takashi Ogura.

Natasha Ellis was eliminated in 12th place, with the final table within sight. She lost her all-in in a three way pot, in which her Kc, Jc failed to improve against Hyoungjin Nam’s Q,Q and Dimitrios Pappis’ A,K.

To wrap the day up, Josh Pang Ang became the final table bubble buy, with Noh Tae Jun taking the chip lead, followed by Lee Nelson in 2nd and the unstoppable Van Marcus in 3rd.
