APPT Melbourne – Day 3 Report
Posted by: Randy Williams - Mon, 2013-09-09 08:21
The third day of the Asia Pacific Poker Tour’s Melbourne Main Event saw 42 players belly up to the tables of the Crown Casino, with the goal of playing down to the final table. By the end of the day, that goal had indeed been secured: 9 players remained standing, with Ashley Mason spearheading the home dash. Local poker buff Billy Argyros made the final table too though, so Mason will have his work cut out for him on Day 4.
David Ian and Joe Cabret made the final table as well.
During the very first hour of Day 3 hostilities, no fewer than 6 players headed to the rail. As always, the short-stacks were compelled to act and they did so, generating quite a bit of early bustle. With 6 of their opponents gone, the remaining players suddenly found themselves on the money bubble. Several players committed all their chips and got away with their tournament lives, but eventually someone had to give and that someone was Kwong Phung. Phung lost his
poker tournament life at the end of a coin-flip, which saw his A,6 fall to Phi Luu’s pocket 7s.
Able to finally breathe a sigh of relief, the 36 survivors, guaranteed a min-cash of $5k, loosened up quite a bit. Soon, the 1 million chip mark was reached, by Jonathan Karamalikis no less, who picked up a bunch of chips from Joel Feldman after a classic pocket rockets vs pocket Js encounter.
Day 3 of the tournament marked another major milestone for one of the players: Iori Yogo clinched the Player of the Year title after Pravin Harji was eliminated in 31st place.
Martin Kozlov was also bounced before the end of the day, together with Bill Jordanou and Ivan Zalac. Jason Gray was sent packing too, before Karamalikis fell as the final table bubble-boy.
