APPT Melbourne – Final Table Reached

Day 3 of the APPT’s Melbourne stop saw a major milestone reached: the final table. Phillip Willcocks of New Zealand was the one who started the day with the largest stack, and when the dust settled, he was still the one in the lead. When the 3rd day of action kicked off, Willcocks had nearly twice as many chips as the man in second place. He wielded that huge stack skillfully through the day, and took full advantage of his elephant in china store status. At the end of the third day, he had nearly a quarter of the chips in play in his possession.

His big Day 3 break came when he managed to take the chips of the only player who had succeeded in reeling him in more or less stack-size wise. The hand in question happened after the money bubble had burst, between Willcocks and Koray Turker. Apparently, no one had told Turker that with the amount of chips he had at his disposal at that stage, he should have merely stayed out of Willcocks’ way to guarantee himself a final table spot.

Turker fired out several bets as the board fell, looking to make a straight, but he eventually failed to get there. The board was showing 7d,3c,5c,3s,2c and he decided to try to bluff the chip leader out of the pot. He pushed everything into the middle, and Willcocks made the call, tabling Kc, 10c for the flush. Turker didn’t really have anything and he was bounced in 28th place, taking home a diminutive $8.6k reward.
James Obst was eliminated on Day 3 too, together with Michael Guzzardi and Keiran Harris. They all made it past the money bubble though. The final table bubble boy was Aharon Shabtay, whose elimination in 10th place after 9 hours of play drew celebratory applause and handshakes from the survivors.
Van Marcus and Leo Boxell made the final table too, together with Michael Frydman and William Jones. All final table participants are either from Australia or New Zealand.
